Transportation tips

Airports/Location: Cancun International Airport, code CUN, is located 15-25 minutes from the Hotel Zone and 15 minutes from Cancun City.

From the Cancun airport there are several options. The airport has a new “fare finder” on its website allowing passengers to save money by checking all available rates, and booking transportation online to all hotels in the Cancun area. Services provided by private companies. Your tour operators include airport transfers when purchasing an air/hotel package.

Cancun is extremely easy for visitors to navigate. The bus system is reliable and inexpensive (one ride costs about 73 cents US = (9.5 pesos). There are many buses serving the Cancun area, so if clients miss one, they won’t have to wait more than 3-4 minutes for the next (how’s that for convenience?). Ruta 1 and Ruta 2 buses (labeled “Hoteles”) travel frequently from the mainland to the beaches along Kukulcan Blvd, the only boulevard in the Hotel Zone. Buses operate between 6 a.m. and midnight. There’s even a bus that goes straight to our downtown!

Taxis in Cancun are regulated, safe and reliable. Make sure your clients know it is a good practice to ask the doorman at the hotel what the rate should be from one point to another, so there are no surprises when it comes time to pay (most hotels post a list of rates from the hotel to various points in and around Cancun). Taxi fares within the Hotel Zone can run anywhere from 100-200 pesos ($10 to $18 US) depending on the distance traveled.

If your clients prefer to experience a new place by cruising its highways and byways, a rental car may be the way to go. Most of the world’s major rental car companies have Cancun offices, and rent the newest vehicle models. If your clients are planning to stay within Cancun (the Hotel Zone or downtown area), the bus system will satisfy their needs. If you have booked them on a day tour, comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles will be provided by their tour company.

Ferry services for foot passengers and cars link several popular destinations for day trips. Ferries run from three areas in the Cancun hotel zone and Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres offering a variety of time options. There is also service throughout the day to/from Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. For schedules, see www.mexicowaterjets.com and http://www.granpuerto.com.mx
